Antonius Severijn
OOC Knowledge
He was born in the final decades of the Dutch Republic, when the British had finally become richer than the Dutch, and the position of Amsterdam as the world's most prominent trading city had come to an end; Antonius Severijn was son to one of the regents of Holland. At the time, the Regents were the dutch 'elite', administrators such as mayors and provincial government officials. Such positions were generally in the hands of small, influential families. These families were not (at least not originally), of nobility, but rather wealthy patricians. Antonius, being born into such a priviledged environment was groomed from birth, to follow in the family's footsteps to become an administrator of a town, city, or province. International politics and the growing jealousy that the Dutch had of the once 'inferior' british' newfound wealth, led to the support of the American Revolution, this in turn led to a declaration of war by the British. Not only that, but amongst the own population, a growing divide was forming; Spurred on by events in France and America, a large group of dutch citizens started demanding a more democratic society, to do away with the power of the regents. These people, known as patriots, started militia's and riots were not uncommon. Another group of citizens, the Orangists, opposed the patriots. Civil war, it seemed, was inevitable. While the conflicts between the government and the patriots was not extensive enough to qualify as a true civil war, the period was certainly a defining one in Dutch history. The Patriots were ultimately forced to flee to northern france, but returned in 1795 to create the short-lived Batavian Republic. Antonius Severijn and his family, naturally supported the orangists, but tended to stay on the sidelines of the conflicts and debates. People were being killed afterall, and it would do the family no good if they were all assasinated by patriot interests. Under French occupation, the city was not doing well at all. Trade had all but stopped. The Kindred were not indifferent to these changes, and many of them knew something was about to happen. They didn't know what, but plenty of plots had surely been hatched, eager to unfold. A number of embraces occured, not all of them with the approval of the prince. Antonius' embrace was not amongst the illegal embraces, but his induction into the society of the damned was no less part of some elder's plots than that of any other embrace in those nights. IC KnowledgeAntonius Severijn has been the Prince of Amsterdam since the end of the second world war, when he and the rest of the Sanctified seized power under circumstances that are still not fully understood by those who were not directly involved in the coup. Though there have been more than a few unsavory rumors flowing around about Severijn and his actions in those nights, none have been verified; and besides, few still whisper of these rumors, as he has ruled the city with great success these past decades. To the Kindred of the city (as to those beyond it's borders), he does represent something of an enigma however;
Indeed, the list goes on and on; There are plenty of rumors about Severijn. Many of them focusing on his apparant skill at political manipulation, culminating in numerous conspiracy theories amongst the Damned, even from those within his Covenant. Few would dare speak them openly however; for though he is not a tyrant, he is not a weak prince either, and has shown plenty of times that the price of treason is not worth paying. |
