Because somehow, we're still here.
Cato Wesp
IC KnowledgeCato Wesp is the Bishop in charge of religious affairs within Amsterdam, and he runs his congregation in a conservative fashion, strictly keeping to the Testament. His strict interpretation has made him popular with some, but has made him somewhat of an unspoken enemy of the Prince, whose policies Cato considers to be too liberal and too indulging of the other Covenants. Both Cato and the Prince are not eager to politicize their differences, not wanting the covenant to appear divided to the rest of the city's Kindred. OOC Knowledge
Born just north of Amsterdam in the fall of 1832 to a poor family that moved to the city after the Belgian revolution. From an early age he was forced; as many children in those days were due to poverty; to work long hours, working in the expansion program of the canals to the sea in order to improve the position of the industrial port of the city. The population of the city in the century is booming, thanks in no small part to the construction programs that improve the position of it's port. Yet the wealth remains concentrated in the hands of the elite, while the poor, like Cato, continue to live in the dirt. Life's tough in these times for the poor, and many are forced to 'supplement' their income with less than legal methods. He managed to muddle through life for three decades, out of sheer survival instinct, or simply because dying was too much of a hassle. The vast increase in population doesn't just attract new industries, but also other things; darker things. More vampires than ever before make their way into the city, eager to feed on the buffet. It was only a matter of time before people would start dying, either on accident or on purpose. Cato had the misfortune of being one of them. Killed before his time by a monster. That must be what his killer was thinking, because he embraced the man without consent of the prince. A disturbingly common occurance at the time. With his sire having been executed for failure to request permission, the young Cato Wesp is courted by both the Invictus and the Sanctified, and decides to join the latter. Faith came easily to the young Cato, yet power did not. Mekhet are by and large distrusted, even by the Sanctified, and the eventual rise of Cato to the rank of Bishop is by no means anything short of a miracle. Or perhaps rather, the result of devious scheming on the part of the Mekhet. Still, despite the shady reputation of the man, he's considered quite the capable bishop and is rumored to be supported in his role by Cardinal Willibrord, the Methusalah of Utrecht who is perhaps the most powerful Kindred in the entire country. |
