Shadows over Amsterdam

Because somehow, we're still here.

Garinus the Younger

IC Knowledge

Garinus the Younger is one of the few Kindred remaining in the city who experienced the decade of black blood. As such, he's obviously an elder, which makes it all the more curious that he's considered by most to have next to no power in the city at all. Some argue that this is because of the nature of the blood that flows through his veins, making it difficult for him to set foot outside of his haven. Yet surely an elder can work around such a limitation to nonetheless establish a considerable base of power for themselves? In the world of Kindred, such questions are frequently asked by the paranoid and socialites alike. Perhaps it's all just an act, they say, and the only reason he seems to be powerless is because he secretly has more power than anyone. Whatever the case may be, Garinus the Younger is an enigmatic, and rarely seen part of the Kindred community in the Netherlands.

The scene; The Morotrophian bloodline had been reeling from the fires of the inquisition, not long before, leaving many to flee their precious havens to lands unknown; Italy was no longer safe for them. Most of the Monks, as they were known, did not find it in them to choose havens of a different stripe once they had arrived in new domains. The events that caused them to flee occured once more, taking many of these Kindred into final death. But not all of them were so unlucky. Indeed, a few escaped such a fate, whilst still enjoying the churchs and monastaries that had at once both comforted and caused their near-doom. They did not adopt the new housing that the other Monks such as Ignace Loix did; to nest amongst mad-men? Folly. Utter Folly.

Garinus Lueberge was one such Monk who did not adopt these new types of haven as his own, instead nesting in one of the catholic monastaries in the city of Amsterdam. A hidden monastary, as the catholics were not permitted to openly practice their faith. The days of the city as a great religious center might have been over, but there were still a draw for the Elder to settle there. He became a member of the Lancea Sanctum, studying the occult, Theban Sorcery, and even death. Such studies brought him into conflict with one of the Osites who resided in the city, and he found himself forced to embrace his ghoul servitor, who had been groomed to such an extent that he now thought of himself as Garinus the Younger, as his Regnant had called him, and as other Kindred were now prone to calling him aswell.

The new Monk was, as common for the line, not able to stay with his Sire, but there were plenty of other religious institutions that the childe could make his own. Certainly, he wasn't strictly speaking compelled by the blood yet to do so, but his service as a Ghoul had made him believe otherwise. Yet there was still a purpose to his embrace, was there not? The conflict with the Osites, though a matter of influence and not physical prowess, was one which would play itself out even into the Decade of Black Blood, which occured not long after his Embrace. Garinus the Elder found final death in this conflict, and to this night; Garinus the Younger is convinced the Osites were responsible; taking advantage of the chaos of the Black Blood War to strike at their enemies, despite the fact they were part of the same covenant.

The Osites involved sired Childer as did Garinus the Younger, and in time, these spread throughout the Netherlands, with only Garinus the Younger now remaining in Amsterdam. But the feud remains, hidden under the surface; and ready to lunge out.

Garinus the younger had made his haven in a hidden Catholic church, much like his sire had, but this church was eventually tore down, and a more permanent one built in 1881. Fortunately for Garinus, his own haven lay in catacombs underneath the construction, and today, his institution is the Sint-Franciscus Xaveriuskerk.
