Shadows over Amsterdam

Because somehow, we're still here.

Sean Ellington

IC Knowledge

Sean Ellington is a known Malkovian, yet for some reason he, along with the other Malkovians in the city, are not only tolerated by the Court, but even afforded some degree of respect. This is evident in Sean being allowed to host his own radioshow on a local radio-station called K-LARP. Most Kindred know about the station ofcourse, it's a local source of 'underground' information, and many Kindred have made a habit of tuning in to Sean's show, even if it's only to keep up to date on the latest developments.

He hasn't so far shown much interest in joining a covenant, seemingly preferring to remain neutral in matters of politics, a fact which has offered him some respect in the eyes of many. Still, the fact that he's Malkovian means that many won't offer him much more than that on principle; the bloodline may be out in the open in Amsterdam, and even accepted and tolerated, but that doesn't mean it's particularly liked by everyone.

Sean was born in 1956 in Birmingham, England as a single child to an almost stereotypical 1950's family. Traditionally strict protestant values meant an uneventful, if rather dull, life growing up. This excruciatingly boring life continued until 1968 when, at the age of 12, the police found young Sean in the company of both his parents after a call made by distressed neighbours who had reported gunshots. The heads of Mary and Stephen Ellington had been blown apart by shotgun shells fired at point blank range while they were sleeping. It was rather painfully obvious to the authorities that the 12 year old Sean was responsible, though he never did admit to it, or even acknowledge that the incident took place. The legal system of the time meant that they could not charge Sean as an adult, or even a minor. The matter was swept under the rug and largely stricken from the record, the incident being blamed on an overbearing family after a brief psychiatric evaluation, following which he was sent to a state psychiatric institution at Broadmoor. From where he was released at the age of 18, having received an education from the state, and having been set up with a job working as a carpenter. In 1975, at the age of 21, he enrolled in an educational program focused on media and entertainment, a field that he took to with great enthusiasm. As he explained it to his teachers; “I never was allowed to have much in the way of entertainment back when i was growing up, so now i guess i have to catch up.”

In 1976, with fellow students, he set up K-LARP, an independent film and radio group which produced several short films and radioplays. In 1980, he followed up with his own latenight radioshow that broadcasted across the birmingham area, focusing on underground music and entertainment. His style was seen as raw, yet sophisticated, a British Howard Stern mixed with the 1950's style radio announcer. He managed to attract a small cult like following, but was banned after only a year by puritan groups who disapproved of his language and choice of topics. Choosing to leave behind the strictures of british radioland, which perhaps reminded him of his childhood, he made his way to Amsterdam, the new mecca for all things related to freedom. Here he started up his own station, bringing english-language news and entertainment to the Dutch capital. He similarly started up his own local TV show, which examined the eccentric side of Amsterdam, including it's many street artists. Again, he gained a small cult following around him, as people flocked to his unique style.

In 1986, Blaine Daniels, one of Amsterdam's Hounds, received a letter from England, signed by Dr.James Griffin Hartleigh. Neither Blaine nor Hartleigh has ever spoken of what the letter said, but a few months later, with approval from the Prince himself, Sean was embraced by the Malkovian hound. Even further a criminal Kindred, apprehended only a few years earlier, and staked into torpor, was elected to be diablerized by the fledgeling Ventrue, in order to expediate the transformation into the Malkovian bloodline. Nobody but the Prince and the Hound knew about any of this, ofcourse, and to this night, the exact reasons behind these acts go unknown outside those in the know, which only includes the prince and some of the Malkovians. What they can point to as fact, is simply that there is a purpose in this and other embraces, and that the bloodline itself, has a purpose that is yet to unfold itself.

All of this wasn't particularly helpful for Sean's burgeoning career ofcourse. He was forbidden from engaging in his media endeavours, and on top of that, all of the shit that washed over him after the 'incident' back from when he was a child, was coming all back. For 5 years he stayed completely out of sight, hidden from the rest of Kindred society, as he was being instructed by his Sire. When he finally was announced as Blaine's Childe, and acknowledgement was given by the Prince, it caused a minor stir. A Sanctified Prince who allowed the Embrace? But the stir itself died down after a while when it was made clear that the rules had not been loosened up by the Prince, and that he would still deal harshly with anyone who did not have a damn good reason for the embrace. Sean himself, meanwhile, was encouraged to develop his Malkovian blood by both Sire and Prince.

18 years after his embrace, in 2004, he was allowed to host a radioshow again, sparking his enthusiasm. It wasn't to be under his old name ofcourse, but rather a new pseudonym. It was also meant to institute some manner of influence over mortal society, by manipulating the events fed to that part of the populace that tended to reject more mainstream media sources. Sean was the perfect fit for the job, and he is now host of a new latenight radioshow that deals with everything weird and freaky about Amsterdam, from the ordinary, to the supernatural.
