Because somehow, we're still here.
Downtown South
The Kindred district of Downtown south might better be called south-east; It borders the eastern canal-belt, the Waterloo plein district, Artis, and East/Watergraafsmeer. Noteable features include the Diamond Exchange, built in 1910, last of three buildings built for that function. After 1870, Amsterdam underwent a renewed economic growth, in no small part thanks to the growth of diamond supplies from Africa. The Diamond Exchange no longer serves it previous function, and today houses the environmental agency of the city; but retains it's former name. It also houses the Amstel Hotel, perhaps Amsterdam's most famous five star hotel, which has housed numerous international dignitatires and rockstars.
