Shadows over Amsterdam

Because somehow, we're still here.

Harborfront

The Harborfront is Amsterdam's old industrial port. This was where ships laden with spices and other exotic goods would arrive in the colonial era. This was where the industrial freighters of the steam era unloaded their cargo. But that was then. Today, industrial shipping has moved to the westpoort district, and the old eastern industrial port of Amsterdam has been transformed into a residential district. Many of the old warehouses remain however, having been taken over by squatters over the years, or serving as offices for a variety of businesses (and not all of them legal). The harborfront has for decades been one of the least desireable locations in downtown Amsterdam, with rampant crime. Efforts to revitalize the area have largely failed, though they have met with a greater success in the western harborfront than they have the eastern.
