Shadows over Amsterdam

Because somehow, we're still here.

Jordaan

The Jordaan is one of Amsterdam's more iconic (at least to dutch people) neighbourhoods, and is well known by people from pretty much anywhere in the country, though this isn't a matter the neighbourhood can be proud of; it's seen as a crime infested region of the inner city, and once treated by media as the 'dutch south-central'. The fact that it has gone through something of a renaissance since the late 80's has yet to diminish it's negative reputation. The neighbourhood is becoming increasingly popular with artists on a tight budget. Despite this fact and the police's effort however, while it isn't as rampant as it once was, crime is still common. The Jordaan has a high concentration of hofjes (inner courtyards), many of them with restored houses and gardens. These courtyards were built by rich people for elderly women, as a kind of charity. By the 1970s most of these courtyards however were in very bad shape, like the rest of the neighbourhood. To date, many of them remain in poor quality, though it's improved somewhat.
