Shadows over Amsterdam

Because somehow, we're still here.

Muiden

The small historic village of Muiden, and the surrounding smaller settlements sit in a rural area along the highway between Almere and Amsterdam, based at the mouth of the river Vecht. The settlement dates from at least the 10th century, and at one time was the seat of power for Floris V, count of the province of Holland. The primary attraction of the area is the Muiderslot, a medieval castle dating from at least the late 13th century, and the location from which Floris V ruled. The castle has passed the test of time admirably and today serves as a national monument and museum.

Count Floris himself was kidnapped in 1297 during a hunt, by two other nobles; Grijsbrecht IV of Amstel, and Herman of Woerden. After 5 days of imprisonment in the castle, he attempted to escape, but was killed by his own squire.
