Shadows over Amsterdam

Because somehow, we're still here.

Redlight district

Technically, Amsterdam is home to three redlight districts, but when people talk about the Amsterdam Redlight District, they typically refer to the one known as the 'Wallen'. Part of the oldest section of the city, it covers several blocks around the Oude Kerk; the oldest structure in the city, and is crossed by several canals. The Wallen is a network of alleys containing several hundred tiny one-room apartments rented by female prostitutes (and some shemales), who offer their services from behind a window or glass door, typically illuminated by red lights. The area also has a number of sex shops, sex theatre's, peepshows, a sex museum, a cannabis museum, and a number of coffeeshops. There's also a bronze statue of a prostitute standing in a window; the world's first monument to the prostitute; which has been erected on the square in front of the Oude Kerk (Old Church), a plaque on the statue reads; “Respect sex workers all over the world”. The total area of the Wallen covers some 6500 square meters.

Prostitution, with the exception of street-side prostitution, is legal in the Netherlands; and has technically been so since 1811, regardless of periods of pro or anti prostitution mentality in the Dutch legal climate. In October, 2000, prostitution was officially removed from the penal code; prior to that it was allowed, but still theoretically subject to stringent conditions. Today, prostitution is considered a legitimate occupation, and sex-workers have to pay income tax like everyone else. Despite this; a significant percentage of the Amsterdam prostitution business remains underground and illegal, and human trafficking remains a common concern.

It seems like an ideal feeding ground for the Kindred; but the Prince has declared it a fallow territory, and feeding in the domain is strictly prohibited. Anyone caught breaking the rule can expect swift justice without trial.
