Shadows over Amsterdam

Because somehow, we're still here.

Rokin

Rokin is a major street in the center of Amsterdam, and is also the name of a larger Kindred district encompassing roughly the lower half of the 'original city heart'. It stretches from the Dam Square to the Munt Square. Like the Damrak, the street of Rokin was once a straight body of water, wider than the canals of the city; and was used as a thoroughfare for transport of goods further into the city from the Damrak, which served in part as the city's harbor. In 1936, the area between the Spui Square and the Dam Square was filled in and paved, leaving the remaining water that lines the lower half of the Rokin street as a mooring point for canal boats. Together with the Damrak, Rokin serves as a 'red carpet' into the city, from the Central Station, with many tourist attractions, historical buildings, hotels, art galleries, museums and shops lining the street.

The Kindred district of Rokin is further home to a number of interesting areas, perhaps chief amongst which is the Kalverstraat, The Netherland´s most exclusive shopping street, and Amsterdam´s busiest shopping street, and has been around for at least 600 years.

The square was also the focal point of the Provo counterculture of the 1960´s, which focused on provoking violent responses from authorities using non-violent bait and was followed by the hippie movement. Legalized squatting is today still popular on the spui street, which several striking buildings having been given over to squatters by the city council.
