Because somehow, we're still here.
Zuideramstel
The domain of Zuideramstel isn't an overly populous one with roughly 47.000 inhabitants, but it's a highly strategic one as it contains the Zuidas Business District, which the city is succesfully putting forward as an international class business district, despite the existence of height restrictions on individual offices in regards to Schiphol airport. Regardless, the Zuidas area is building office space in a rapid pace, and future fortunes may very well be made here.
Besides the Zuidas, there's the Rai Convention Center, which is known throughout the country and draws many visitors. It's also the location of the Vrije Universiteit (Free University), one of two universities in the city. The university was founded in 1880 by a group of orthodox-protestant christians who considered the theology courses of other universities to be too liberal. In this context, the word 'free' in the name, refers to being free from church/state interference, in that they considered themselves bound only to the word of God. These strong religious overtones would continue unto the 1970's, but since then, it has not been considered intricately tied to christianity anymore.
